It might be that when your guild was starting you set up these wonderful raid training runs to gear people up and get them raid savy. It might be that every week you returned over and over to naxx to teach people how to get out of the fire, to change targets, to think and to do.
But these days even with the crappest of raiders naxx is a walk in the park so you have to change, you have to move on and find new training grounds and new ways to upskill people or you will wake up one day and find you have an empty guild because people got bored.
I had a number of weeks where I had several teams of raiders, a combination of competant and in training members. These raids went to a variety of places and the end goal was to teach people how to raid. To give them the practice and the exposure. This was on the heels of a high number of new recruits in guild, many of whom might be well geared but hadnt stepped foot outside a heroic.
It was hugely successful in my opinion. Several of those original fire squatters are now some of our best raiders.
After a while the attendance began to drop and so I canned them. Then ICC came along and we all got caught up in that
But things change in guild on a weekly basis. Old members leave for greener grasses or to run their own guildes their way, newer members join and the cycle of gearing and training seems to be never ending. These days we use ToC as an assessment tool - are they getting out of the fire? can they follow instructions, give them variety and see what they can do. Often when i am in a run I deliberately undergear or underheal or undertank it. Often there will be wipes after wipes and the reason is to actually make people comfortable with a couple of things:
1) Wipes happen. If I take people to things that we can carry them thru no matter how badly they are doing, how are they going to cope with that first wipe after believing they are so uber they can do anything?
2)If the heals/tank OR Dps is a little low you can still clear Toc if you raid right. I know of people who are doing content in blue gear to prove gear isnt everything... experience/ability is. This is something I have firmly believed for a long time.. sure nice gear ups the performance but what is the use of having HUGE dps if you only life for a few minutes at a time. Im all for learning that you have to do X,Y or Z or the WHOLE raid will wipe. So you are not raiding with me for a free ride - you have to earn your supper too!
I believe anyone can be taught to raid - some will be exceptional and some will be average - but everyone can do it..... Its a bit like learning to read - takes time, patience and persistence. And like reading - its not everyones cup of tea.
So where to from here with the changes?
Due to the regularity of account hackings I have changed the bank priveledges and only Pedigrees and Raiders can access all the tabs in the bank. To be a raider you have to have gone thru "raider in training" assessment - you have to have shown you can cope with pretty much anything thrown at you and you can still get out of the fire and you have to show me your core hound pup.... miss ticking any of the boxes and you remain a casual guild raider. No drama there - you just dont get to come to the uber stuff. ToGC, Undying, ICC progression that sort of thing :)
and the intraining ranks? well they have a new training ground in ToC10 man, Ulduar and finally ICC non progressive runs..... when the time comes and they are ready to fly - then Raiders they can be.
